Ruby Sparks

Esta ha sido mi película de la semana con pinta de ser muy buena o gustarme mucho. Y os preguntaréis, "¿ha cumplido?" A lo que yo os responderé, "más que eso, amigos...más que eso". 

This has been my movie of the week that was supposed to be super good. And you would be wondering, "did it achieved it?" So I'll answer, "more than that, my friends...more than that".

Puede que Ruby Sparks esté planteada como una comedia romántica, pero os puedo decir que está todo lo alejada posible de las típicas pasteladas edulcoradas americanas. Siguiendo más en la línea de "¡Olvídate de mí!", "500 Días Juntos" o la reciente y genial "Una Cuestión de Tiempo", esta película nos plantea una idea bastante original. ¿Qué pasaría si escribieras sobre la chica de tus sueños y un día, dicho personaje se materializara en la vida real? Eso es lo que le pasa a Calvin, un escritor y genio precoz que, tras años de bloqueo creativo después de su primera novela, comienza a escribir de nuevo, creando el personaje de Ruby Sparks. Lo que Calvin no esperaba es que dicho personaje cobrara vida...

Ruby Sparks might be introduced as a romantic comedy, but I can tell you it is as far as possible from the typical sugary American style love story. More similar to "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "500 Days of Summer" or the recent and great "About Time", this movie shows a quite original idea. What would happen if you write about your dream girl and one day such a character happens to come to life? That is what happens to Calvin, a writer and a precocious genius who, after years suffering from writer's block since his first novel was published, begins to write again, creating a character named Ruby Sparks. Which Calvin didn't expect was that such a character could become real...

Ya nos hemos encontrado antes con historias en distintos formatos que tratan el tema del escritor creando ficción que se torna realidad (un gran ejemplo es la maravillosa "En la Boca del Miedo", de John Carpenter), pero esta película lo explora de una forma diferente. Aunque dicha peculiaridad resulta cómica en un principio y en algunos otros momentos, al final de la película hay una escena que realmente considero devastadora, y que me hizo llorar con hipo y todo. 

We've already seen before some stories in different formats dealing with the topic of the writer creating fiction that becomes reality (a great example is "In the Mouth of Madness", by John Carpenter), but this movie explores this in a different way. Even if such a curious thing turns out to be comic at the beginning and at some other moments, at the end of the film there is a scene that I really consider devastating and that made me cry with hiccup and everything.

Me refiero a la escena en la que, tras una dura discusión, Calvin le revela a Ruby su origen y no sólo eso, sino que lo hace de la forma más cruel. Le demuestra el poder que posee sobre ella y procede a controlarla escribiendo distintas acciones, desposeyéndola de toda su dignidad. Esa escena me rompió el corazón, y ya sólo pensando en ella me vuelven las lágrimas a los ojos. 

I mean the scene when, after a strong argument, Calvin reveals Ruby her origin and not just that, but he does it in the cruelest way. He shows her the power he has over her and proceeds to control her by writing different actions, taking her dignity away from her. That scene broke my heart and just thinking about it tears come to my eyes again.

 A pesar de la fantasía en la que se basa la historia, la considero una de las películas que mejor retrata una relación sentimental. Podemos ver cómo Calvin, incluso cuando ha creado a la chica de sus sueños y consigue que sea su novia, no se da por satisfecho, y con cada pequeño defecto o falta que Ruby comete, él utiliza su máquina de escribir para arreglarlo. Lo malo es que muchas veces es peor el remedio que la enfermedad, y lo único que Calvin consigue con estos cambios es empeorar las cosas. Esto no deja de ser una metáfora sobre las relaciones en la vida real, pues ya estamos avisados de que no es bueno intentar cambiar a las personas, pues cada uno tiene sus pros y sus contras, es lo que nos hace diferentes y especiales. Cuando intentas inmiscuirte en la personalidad de otro, lo único que acarreará a la larga son consecuencias no deseadas, ni para esa persona, ni para ti.

In spite of the fantasy that the story uses, I consider it one of the best movies at depicting love relationships. We can even see how Calvin, having creating her dream girl and having her as his girlfriend, is not satisfied yet, and he uses his typewriter to fix every little imperfection or fault Ruby makes. The problem with this is that many times the cure becomes worst than the illness and the only thing Calvin does with these changes is getting a worst situation. This is just a metaphor about relationships in real life, as we already know it's not good to try to change people, since everyone have their pros and cons, that's what makes us different and special. When you try to mess with someone's personality, you're just getting unwanted consequences, neither for you neither for the other person, in a long term.

Me gustaría también comentar un poco el final. En parte me ha gustado y en parte no. No me ha gustado porque Calvin no se merece a Ruby después de lo que le hizo. Pero bueno, podría haber sido peor. Él tenía el control y se dio cuenta a tiempo de que lo que estaba haciendo era terrible, así que el acto de "liberar" a Ruby, quizás lo redima un poco. Me gusta la idea de que puedan empezar de cero y sin la posibilidad de realizar esos cambios que destruyeron la relación.

I would also like to write a bit about the ending. In one hand I like it, in the other hand, I don't. I didn't like it because Calvin doesn't deserve Ruby after what he did to her. But well, it could have been worst. He had the control and he realized in time that what he was doing was awful, so the act of "freeing" Ruby may redeem him a little bit. I like the idea of the fresh start with no possibility of making those changes that ruined the relationship before.

En resumen, un guión impecable de mi nueva ídola, Zoe Kazan, así como unas interpretaciones sublimes por parte de ella y del siempre alucinante Paul Dano. Fotografía, música y todo lo demás, simplemente PERFECTOS. 

In summary, an impeccable screenplay by my new idol, Zoe Kazan, along with sublime performances by herself and the always outstanding Paul Dano. Cinematography, music and everything else, simply PERFECT.
