Resultados Oscars 2014 / Oscars 2014 Results

Aquí viene mi comentario sobre el resultado de los Oscars. La verdad es que he acertado bastantes en mi lista de las que creía que iban a ganar (16/21), pero no he acertado tantas en cuanto a mis favoritas (7/21). Comentaré solamente las categorías principales.

Here comes my comment about the Oscars result. To be honest, I’ve guessed quite a lot from my “expected ones” list (16/21), but I didn’t get so many concerning to my favourites (7/21). I will just write about the main categories.

•  Mejor Película/ Best Motion Picture: 12 Años de Esclavitud/ 12 Years a Slave

Estaba bastante segura de que se lo iba a llevar, aunque mi favorita era “Her”. A ambas les di un 10/10 en su momento, pero tengo que reconocer que “Her” me gustó más. Aun así, no me parece mal que se haya llevado la estatuilla la película de Steve McQueen, puesto que en cuanto a calidad, lo tiene más que merecido.

I was quite sure this one was gonna win, even if my favourite was “Her”. I rated 10/10 both of them, but I have to admit I liked “Her” more. Anyway, I’m not upset about Steve McQueen’s movie getting the Oscar, as regarding to quality, it is more than deserved.

• Mejor Director/ Best Director: Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity)

De nuevo, he acertado con mi predicción, pero no era mi favorito en esta ocasión. De todas formas, tengo que decir que tampoco me disgusta demasiado la decisión. Desde luego, Alfonso Cuarón es un magnífico director, y ya lo ha demostrado con películas como “Hijos de los Hombres”, “La Princesita” o “Harry Potter y el Prisionero de Azkaban” (mi favorita de la saga), pero tengo claro que “Gravity” no es su mejor trabajo.

Again, I was right with my prediction, even if he wasn’t my favourite this time. But I’m not disappointed about it. Alfonso Cuarón is certainly a great director and he has showed it with movies like “Children of Men”, “A Little Princess” or “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (my favourite of the saga), but I’m pretty sure “Gravity” is not his best work.

• Mejor Actor Principal/ Best Male Performance in a Leading Role: Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)

Este la mayoría de la gente no se lo acaba de creer, aunque yo sí me lo esperaba. ¿Se lo merece? Pues…sí y no.

Sí, porque su actuación es acojonante y, sinceramente (después de aborrecerlo todos estos años), ha conseguido ganarse mi respeto y el de muchos más. No sólo eso, sino que parece que últimamente está en racha, teniendo en cuenta trabajos muy buenos como los que realiza en “True Detective” y “El Lobo de Wall Street” (a falta de ver “Mud”, de la que también hablan maravillas).

Pero yo no se lo hubiera dado este año por una razón muy simple. Tengo miedo de que se confíe, de que se crea que ya no le hace falta seguir esforzándose porque ha llegado a la cumbre, lo cual sería un terrible error teniendo en cuenta que está en un punto clave de su carrera. La otra posibilidad es que ahora, teniendo más reconocimiento, pueda conseguir mejores papeles que le ayuden a explotar esta nueva faceta de buen actor tan desconocida hasta ahora. Si es así, me callo, y muy merecido.

Most of people didn’t see that coming, but I did. Does he deserve it? Well…yes and no.

Yes, because his performance is fucking awesome and, sincerely (after hating him all this years), he managed to get my respect and the respect of many others. And that’s not all as it seems he’s lately in the right path, taking into account the very good work he does in “True Detective” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” (I haven’t seen “Mud” yet, but people say wonders about it).

But I wouldn’t have given him the award this year for a simple reason. I’m afraid he gets too confident and thinks he doesn’t need to make the effort anymore since he’s already at the top, which would be an awful mistake as he’s in a key point in his career. The other possibility is that now, having more recognition, he can manage to get better roles that help him to explore this new good acting skill he had so hidden before. If that’s the case, I’ll shut up, and well deserved.

• Mejor Actriz Principal/ Best Female Performance in a Leading Role: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)

Estaba en todas las quinielas, incluida la mía, así que no ha sido ninguna sorpresa. Y es que era difícil que alguna de las otras candidatas diera la sorpresa, porque lo que hace Cate Blanchett en la película no tiene nombre. Esta mujer no actúa, se come “Blue Jasmine”.

She was in every bet, including mine, so no surprises. In fact, it was pretty difficult that any of the other nominees would win, because what Cate Blanchett does in the movie is just amazing. This woman doesn’t act, she eats “Blue Jasmine”.

•  Mejor Actor de Reparto / Best Male Performance in a Supporting Role: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club

Otro que ha cumplido mis pronósticos y que tampoco me ha dejado un sabor amargo, ya que no hay duda de que se lo merece. Michael Fassbender era mi favorito, pero estoy segura de que volverá a tener nuevas oportunidades para llevárselo. Sin embargo, para Leto ha sido un buen empujón que espero que lo mantenga en activo tras sus 4 años alejado del cine. Por si no fuera poco, dio el que, en mi opinión, fue el mejor discurso de la noche.

Another one that meets my prognostics and doesn’t let me a bad taste about it, because there is no doubt he deserves it. Michael Fassbender was my favourite, but I’m sure he will have new opportunities to get the award. Nevertheless, for Leto it has been a good push I hope keeps it active after his 4 years away from cinema. If this isn’t enough, he gave, in my opinion, the best speech of the night.

• Mejor Actriz de Reparto / Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Lupita Nyong’o (12 Años de Esclavitud / 12 Years a Slave)

En esta ocasión, gana mi favorita y no la que tenía pensado que iba a llevarse la estatuilla (Jennifer Lawrence). Me alegro mucho por ella, la verdad, porque la actuación que hace es simplemente perfecta.

This time, my favourite wins and not the one I thought she would take the award (Jennifer Lawrence). I’m very happy for her because her performance is simply perfect.

•  Mejor Película de Habla No Inglesa/ Best Foreign Language Film: La Grande Bellezza / La Gran Belleza / The Great Beauty

Mi favorita de las dos nominadas que había visto (La Gran Belleza y La Caza), era “La Caza”, ya que consiguió ponerme los pelos de punta con una historia, un guión y unas actuaciones que son de sobresaliente. De todas formas, la victoria de “La Gran Belleza” no me indigna para nada, puesto que la considero una muy buena película.

My favourite from the two nominees I got to watch (The Great Beauty and The Hunt) was The Hunt, because it gave me goosebumps with a story, a screenplay and performances that are outstanding. Anyway, the victory of “The Great Beauty” doesn’t annoy me as I consider it a great movie.

•  Mejor Película de Animación/ Best Animated Film: Frozen

Aquí llega mi primera indignación (aunque sabía que iba a ganar). Os recuerdo que, cuando fui a ver Frozen al cine, me pareció bastante entretenida y tal, pero ni de lejos a la altura de los clásicos Disney, y muy por debajo de la maravillosa “Rompe Ralph”. Ernest & Celestine, con más humildad, tuvo un efecto mucho mayor en mí. Es una película de animación simplemente preciosa, además de ser una fábula perfecta. No he visto “Gru 2” ni “Los Croods”, puesto que no me llaman la atención para nada. La que si me quedo con ganas de ver es “The Wind Rises”, del maestro Miyazaki, que nunca defrauda.

Here comes my first indignation (even if I knew it was going to win). I remind you that, when I went to the cinema to watch “Frozen”, I thought it was quite entertaining but not at all as good as the Disney classics and way worse than the wonderful Wreck-It Ralph. Ernest & Celestine, with more humility, had a much bigger effect on me. It is an animated film that is simply beautiful, and also a perfect fable. I haven’t watched “Despicable Me 2” and “The Croods” because they didn’t call my attention at all. The one I really wanted to watch is “the Wind Rises”, from the master Miyazaki, who never disappoints.

• Mejor Documental/ Best Documentary Feature : “20 Feet From Stardom”

Al final me quedaron por ver este que ha ganado y “Cutie and the Boxer”, pero dudo mucho que puedan ser mejores que uno sólo de los otros tres nominados. “Dirty Wars” y “The Square” me parecieron muy buenos y en cuanto a “The Act of Killing”…no hay palabras que puedan expresarlo. Este último es el que me hubiera parecido justo que se lo llevara (no estando nominada “Blackfish”, lo cual me parece o una tremenda estupidez o una asquerosa jugarreta por parte de SeaWorld), ya que es un documental como no se ha visto antes. Pero no, ya se ve que a los americanos siempre les interesará más ignorar todo lo relacionado con países en guerra o situaciones que vulneran los derechos humanos, a menos que queden ellos como héroes.

Finally I had this one and “Cutie and the Boxer” left to watch, but I doubt they can be better than any of the other three nominees. “Dirty Wars” and “The Square” were very good and regarding to “The Act of Killing”…there are no words that can describe it. It would have been fair if this last one would have won the award (not being “Blackfish” a nominee, which is either a huge stupidity or a disgusting trick from SeaWorld), since it’s a documentary like any other seen before. But no, you can see Americans will always be more interested in ignoring everything related with countries at war or situations violating human rights, unless they look like heroes.

• Mejor Guión Original/ Best Original Screenplay: “Her”

Ninguna sorpresa aquí (la sorpresa hubiera sido que no se lo llevara). Nadie puede decir que el guión de esta película no es una de las cosas más originales que se han visto en los últimos años, plagados de remakes, adaptaciones, secuelas, precuelas… “Her” trae frescura al cine, y lo hace de una forma magistral.

Any surprises here (the real surprise would have been it not winning). Nobody can say that the screenplay for this movie is not one of the most original things seen these years, full of remakes, adaptations, sequels, prequels… “Her” brings freshness to the cinema, and it makes it in an excellent way.

• Mejor Guión Adaptado/ Best Adapted Screeplay: “12 Años de Esclavitud” (12 Years a Slave)

Aquí no podía opinar mucho, dado que no he leído ninguna de las obras en las que están basadas las películas, pero ha ganado la que esperaba. Ya he comprado el libro de Solomon para leerlo y comparar con la película.

I could’t give my opinion in this one that much, since I haven’t read any of the books that inspired the movies, but the winner was the one I expected. I’ve already bought Solomon’s book to read and compare with the film.

• Mejor Edición/ Best Editing: Gravity

De nuevo, la que esperaba. Aunque me ha gustado más la edición de “12 Años de Esclavitud”, tampoco me disgusta esta, así que nada.

Again, the one I expected. Even though I prefer the editing of “12 Years a Slave”, this one doesn’t disappoint me, so that’s alright.

•  Mejor Fotografía/ Best Cinematography: Gravity

Esta sí que me hace hervir la sangre. NO. ¿Cómo se le puede dar un Oscar a Mejor Fotografía a una película mayormente creada por ordenador? No me parece bien, sobre todo teniendo a otras nominadas más merecedoras como “Nebraska”, “Inside Llewyn Davis” o “Prisioneros” (a falta de ver “The Grandmaster”). No me parece justo y fuera. Y ya si nos ponemos a contar las ignoradas a la hora de las nominaciones... (La Gran Belleza, Big Bad Wolves, Her, 12 Años de Esclavitud, Frances Ha…).

This one really made my blood boil. NO. How can they give an Oscar for Best Cinematography to a movie mostly created by computer? It doesn’t seem right, specially having other more deserving nominees like “Nebraska”, “Inside Llewyn David” or “Prisoners” (I haven’t watched “The Grandmaster”). I don’t think it’s fair, that’s it. And if we think about the movies that have been ignored in the nominations... (The Great Beauty, Big Bad Wolves, Her, 12 Years a Slave, Frances Ha…).

• Mejor Banda Sonora Original/ Best Original Score: Gravity

¿Alguien me recuerda una sola melodía de alguno de los temas que componen esta banda sonora? Pienso que en la música de una película reside gran parte de su éxito, así que cuando, después de ver una película, no se me queda ni un solo tema en la cabeza, no pienso que sea una buena banda sonora. Las bandas sonoras de “Philomena” y “Her”, por el contrario, sí que me llegaron al corazoncito. También llevo años queriendo que creen un premio a “Mejor Banda Sonora No Original” o algo así, en la que se dé reconocimiento a aquellos que, aunque no hayan compuesto todos (o ninguno) de los temas, hayan realizado una selección perfecta que se amolda a la película a la perfección. Tarantino, por ejemplo, es maravilloso a la hora de escoger la música para sus películas, y de este año destacaría “Frances Ha” y “La Gran Belleza”.

Anybody remembers any single tune of any of the themes that form this original score? I think that in the music of a movie resides a big part of its success, so when, after watching a movie, not a single theme stays in my mind, it makes me think it’s not such a good score. On the contrary, the original scores for Philomena and Her really got to my heart. For several years I’ve been looking forward the creation of an award for “Best Non Original Score” or something like that, in which they give recognition to those who, even not having composed every (o any) of the themes, have made a perfect selection that fits perfectly to the movie. For example, Tarantino is wonderful picking the music for his movies, and in this year I would highlight “Frances Ha” and “The Great Beauty”.

• Mejor Canción Original/ Best Original Song: “Let It Go”

Aunque era de esperar, hubiera sido más bonito (y le hubiera ahorrado el bochorno a Travolta) si se lo hubiera llevado “The Moon Song”, mi favorita. Aunque a saber cómo hubiera pronunciado el señorito el nombre de Karen O…

Even if it was to be expected, it would have been nicer (and would have saved Travolta the embarrassment) if my favourite, “The Moon Song”, would have won the award.  But who knows how this man would have pronounced Karen O’s name…
